Started in 1945 by Dutta and Chandrakant, this modest eatery in the heritage precinct of Fontainhas is hugely famous for their fish and chicken thalis. Welcome to this place with a local and casual feel, where the locals drop in for a good home-cooked meal. Thronged by domestic tourists too, this establishment is housed in the inner, open courtyard of an old Goan Hindu-style house. Anandashram is one of the oldest eateries in Goa and a kind of a charitable institution for its affordable and delicious Goan fare. You enter through a small anteroom with board showcases. The 'Irani styled' restaurant, with overhead fans, tables laminated with Coco Cola advertisement and chipped tiling on the pillars, is straightforward and unpretentious. The place is packed during lunch for their different Fish Thali consisting of kingfish or the fish of the day. The special thali here typically consists of chapati, one vegetable, pickle, rice, fish curry, fried fish, chicken (substantial portions of meat cooked in the shagoti-style with roasted garam masala) some shell fish (xinanyo), sol kadi – the cooling digestive drink made from kokum, and so on. Choice of fish varies – kingfish, chonak, vhangda, or bombil. The prawn masala, fish masala and fish-fry are the fast moving items.
