Back in the 14th century, on the streets of Malacca, were the legends of a Chinese princess from the Sultanate. Part of the same franchise that was established in Pune in 1997, Malaka Spice is an inspiration of the cuisine by Praful Chandawarkar that brings his South-East Asian cuisine to Goa. Enter and be greeted by the flowered tuk-tuk in the form of the privateer’ ship, taking you to the place. Choose to sit in the air-conditioned section or move outdoors into the airy verandah. The menu is an interesting mix of history and dishes. Embark on the starters with the Cambodian style lotus stem tango – a sweet and sour spicy preparation in honey chilli sauce. Another top favourite is the top hat – delicately moulded baskets of rice crisps, holding an assortment of sprouts and minced vegetables, from the city of Malacca, attractively presented on a wooden stand. Murtabak, a Malaysian stuffed pancake with minced meat, born from the Indo-Muslim kitchens is a must-have. For the mains, the Malaka kari kapitan – gravy of cashew and coconut milk spiced with chilli flakes along with the Malaysian roti – a cousin of the Malabar paratha are must-tries.
