It is not often you come across cafes that are cute and quirky and at the same time pay attention to good healthy produce. Birdsong cafe with its exposed brick wall, dark wooden furniture and a funky poster of The Beatles sipping coffee is one of Bandra's favourite cafes dedicated to organic produce. While this is a health inspired cafe it is not vegetarian or vegan though some dishes can be made on request. The menu is also much more than just soups, salads and juices
One of the first things I do on vacations is wake up early, pull on a pair of trainers and head to the direction of the nearest peaceful café. The smell of fresh grounded coffee beans and just baked bread quickly dissolves any tension knots I have. My fingers quickly pull out my current book and all those words come alive with a sip of hot coffee. This scenario may make you feel envious but not for long. You can also relax with delectable breakfast at ‘Birdsong Café’ snuggled in lane of Hill Road, Bandra West, Western Suburbs, Mumbai. The café is brainchild of a wonderfully passionate baker Jenny who used to deliver bakery products to Bagel Shop. The breads are innovations of her husband whose delicious efforts are combined with her recipes and outcome is healthy and mouth-watering. Birdsong Café is one of the earlier organic cafes with rustic earthy appearance defining its name.
The café is trendy and simple with key artistic elements to transform the image. Large bay window tables are favourite amongst the customers who like nothing better in the morning than to sit and watch the world pass you by. Busy Mumbai roads seems almost bearable through the glass pane of Birdsong Café. The owners have kept only limited tables so you might not find a vacant place unless you reach early. Kickstart your day on the right note with the café’s healthy organic breakfast range such as, eggs made to order, kheema pav, pancakes, granola bowl, fresh fruit bowl and stuffed eggs with your chosen bread. For lazy evenings grab a quinoa salad, roast pumpkin & almond soup, power salad, mutton broth, smoked eggplant & herbed lavash, focaccia bruschetta, spinach & mushroom soup, herb roasted baby jacket potato and falafel in my pocket with chicken.
Stuffier mains will take you towards home-made pizzas with assorted toppings such as, minced lamb & olive, pesto veggies & fungi, spicy chicken pizza and birdsong marguerite pizza. Or be happy with their home-made sandwiches made with self-ground flour. You will be offered chicken & mustard, mushroom lentil, quinoa patty, chicken avocado, almond pesto and roasted lamb & caramelized onion sandwich. Pastas, lasagne, risotto, mutton stew with brown rice, chicken chimichurri with roasted veggies and chicken curry can make fabulous substitute. Birdsong Café is a bit on the expensive side so be prepared to drop some shillings.
