Versova really said “go to Bangalore without booking a flight” because that’s exactly what my meal at Shayanam Café felt like.

Some places serve South Indian food. Some recreate memories. And Shayanam somehow managed to do the latter.

The moment the dishes started arriving, it instantly felt like one of those old Bangalore breakfast spots — comforting aromas of ghee, dosas fresh off the tawa, and food that doesn’t try too hard because it already knows it’s good.

We started with the Benne Dosa, and this was comfort at its finest. Buttery, crisp around the edges, soft inside, and carrying that richness that makes Benne Dosa so special.

Then came the Davangere Open Dosa, which immediately stood out with its beautiful texture and crispness. Alongside this, we also had the Bangalore Masala Dosa, and this one brought all the nostalgia. Crisp outside, flavourful filling inside, and exactly the kind of dosa that reminds you why Bangalore breakfasts are so iconic.

The Podi Idlis, generously coated in ghee, were pure happiness on a plate. Soft, fluffy idlis covered in podi with the richness of ghee tying everything together beautifully.

We also tried the Thatte Idli, and this deserves a special mention. Pillowy soft, light, and incredibly comforting — the kind of idli that doesn’t need much to impress because the texture itself does all the work.

Then came the rice section, and honestly, this felt like eating at someone’s home.

The Curd Rice was cooling and comforting, the Lemon Rice brought brightness and freshness, while the Tamarind Rice had that lovely sweet-tangy depth that makes you savour every bite.

And then came the star of the table — the Jodi Masala Dosa.

This was the dish that stayed with me. Crisp, comforting, flavourful, and the kind of dosa you keep thinking about long after the meal ends. Easily my favourite of the day.

What I loved most about Shayanam was how honest and uncomplicated the food felt. Nothing was trying to be modern or experimental. It was simply good food, rooted in tradition and full of warmth.

Final thoughts:
Shayanam Café isn’t just serving South Indian food in Mumbai — it’s serving a little piece of Bangalore. The meal felt nostalgic, comforting, and deeply satisfying from start to finish.

And yes… I’m still thinking about that Jodi Masala Dosa.
