During my stay in Pondicherry, I ended up visiting The Essence Brew on two separate evenings—and it turned out to be a relaxed, dependable spot to unwind after a long day.
I tried two very different beers across my visits. The standout for me was their Trippel—a Belgian-style beer that carried a lovely mix of fruity, floral, and slightly spicy notes. It had a gentle sweetness balanced by firm bitterness and a pleasantly rounded malt profile, making it both flavourful and surprisingly easy to drink. The Japanese Lager, on the other hand, was clean, crisp, and refreshing—perfect if you’re in the mood for something lighter and fuss-free.
What added to the overall experience were the small but thoughtful touches. Each drink was served with complimentary peanuts and cheeslings, which felt simple but hit the spot and paired well with the beers. The ambience was laid-back, with an unpretentious vibe that made it easy to settle in and stay a little longer.
While the focus here is clearly on the brews rather than an elaborate food menu, The Essence Brew does what it sets out to do quite well—serve good beer in a comfortable, no-pressure setting.
Overall, a solid place for beer lovers looking to enjoy well-crafted brews in Pondicherry, whether you’re in the mood to explore something interesting like a Trippel or stick to a clean, familiar lager.

This place just opened a few weeks ago, and I was curious about the lack of Google reviews, so I decided to check it out. Located inside the Accord Hotel, the location isn’t an issue at all, plus you get the perk of valet parking. The brewery is on the 4th floor, which seemed odd and made me wonder how popular it really is. Sure enough, I was the only customer there at 1 pm on a Saturday. The decor felt more like a bar than a brewery, despite the visible brew tanks. Personally, I don’t mind the bar vibe as long as the beer and food are good.

I started with the sampler since there were no reviews to guide me. Unfortunately, all six samplers tasted like water. The IPA, my favorite type of craft beer, had no flavor and was super diluted. I mentioned this to the server, who quickly got the manager involved. The manager promised to fix the issue before I ordered a full-sized beer. True to his word, the next IPA I tried was much better—it tasted like a completely different beer. Apparently, the server didn’t know how to pour the first glass of the day and needed to clear the lines first. The Tripple was the next best beer, a strong malt brew, but I skipped the rest since they were standard lagers and pilsners, which aren’t my thing.

The food was another letdown. It arrived undercooked, but they fixed it when I sent it back, and it was much better the second time. They didn’t charge me for the sampler, likely because I complained and the manager agreed it was diluted.

Overall, they need to pay more attention to detail. It’s no surprise the place was empty, but it’s still early days, and I hope they iron out these issues.

If you are looking for a dining experience in Puducherry that balances variety with exceptional quality, Essence at the Accord is a must-visit.
The Food Quality
The first thing that strikes you is the freshness. Whether you’re diving into the local flavors or opting for their continental spread, the quality of ingredients shines through. Every dish we tried was seasoned to perfection—not just "hotel food," but food with genuine soul and flavor. The buffet spread is extensive, yet they haven’t sacrificed quality for quantity, which is a rare find.
Service Spotlight: Umang
What truly elevated our evening, however, was the impeccable service. A special mention goes to Umang, who looked after us with incredible professionalism and warmth. He was attentive without being intrusive, ensuring our table was well-attended and offering great recommendations that hit the mark. It’s rare to find service that feels this personalized and sincere.
Verdict: Between the top-tier food and the hospitality provided by Umang, Essence has easily become one of my favorite spots in the city. Highly recommended!
