While the hotel has changed names (amongst many others) from ITC’s Park Sheraton to now, the Crowne Plaza Chennai - nothing seems to affect the immovable Dakshin. Arguably, the godfather of South Indian fine dining in India, Dakshin remains a jewel in the crown of ITC’s signature dining brands (no pun intended). The food, the concept, the décor (almost) and even the staff have remained seemingly unchanged at this icon, since it opened its doors in 1989, as Chef Praveen Anand’s labour of love. Accolades and legends aside, perhaps the most endearing aspect of Dakshin is seeing it sold out weekend after weekend, bustling with chirpy Chennai families eating to their hearts content, under the smiles of their venerable (and quite formidable) Tamil matriarchs. This is that kind of place.

And dakshin is at ground floor Ambience - The ambience have been inspired from the ancient temples in Tamil Nadu .. From the entrance door to the interiors everything looks absolutely blissful .. The Carnatic live music will be performed while u can enjoy having ur food .. Service was top notch .. very quick to our needs .. patience enough to answer all the queries relating to food and also a short description abt each food while serving the same .. One stop destination for scrumptious starters to dessert
Excellent Food at the restaurant, the stomach was full but the food was so good that we kept on wanting to eat more. Mr. Palani & EBI had excellent choices made for us and we definitely recommend one meal to travellers.
It was a sunday afternoon with my family at dakshin, quite a busy place as it is always manage to get a table, we decided on thali some veg and some noveg. There we go, man you trust me from the appetizer to dessert its a long long journey. Our head waiter RAJKUMAAR who with enthu and smile explained each and every dish to us that we over ate, his explanation was that consuming a thali is not great eating with correct combination is right, yes he was right banana dosa with tamarind chutney, nandu puttu appam with coconut milk . And home made ice cream elaneer payasam all was so great. Thanks to rajkumar and Mani who did a wonderfull job and will cherish till my next visit

For authentic South-Indian food, there is no place better than ‘Dakshin’, which is said to be the godfather of South-Indian cooking in Chennai. The restaurant remains unchanged since it opened its doors in 1989 at Crowne Plaza hotel in Alwarpet. While the hotels changed hands from ITC to Crowne Plaza, Dakshin remained the same elegant self.
The beauty of Dakshin lies in its beautiful traditional décor that reflects the heritage of Southern India. It is one of those places that retains the timeless appeal over the years, filling their loyal patrons with nostalgia and charm. Dakshin has designed their dining room on the formal lines with small round or square tables filling the room. Placed on the table is big metal plates lined with a banana leaf, a quintessential part of South-Indian cuisine. The room is spacious and colourful, decorated with key pieces of South-Indian heritage. A large statue of dancing Natraj stands majestically in the centre of the room, reemphasising the South-Indian theme. On walls you will notice beautiful Tanjore paintings all around the room. Dakshin is classy, traditional, vibrant and exotic looking.
Menu of Dakshin is unsparingly South-Indian and includes cuisines from various different regions of Kerala, Chettinad and Andhra. Though expensive, Dakshin is bound to leave you with a multitude of lovely food memories. Its menu is varied and filled with a plethora of sublime classics hailing from all over southern India. Start going through the menu by sipping on refreshing spiced butter milk and continue with, Dakshin yera, nandu puttu, tomato pappu, meen moilee, vazhai shunti, urlai roast and veinchina mamsam. Main course selection is a melange of curries ranging from different states. Feast on, kori rassa, attukal paya, malai curry, vera avarai masala, chapa pulusu, chanaga pappu mamsam koora, Battani masala and avial. Pair the curries with appams or bisi bela bhath or kal dosai. Finale of basundi, badam halwa, vathalappam, coconut baguette and elaneer payasam is a sweet finish.
