In a city which boasts of the longest urban beach in India, speciality seafood restaurants are conspicuously hard to come by. Inspired by our eponymous beach, The Marina makes a serious contention in the category. An endearing proposition from M Mahadevan, the eatery showcases a compelling attempt at responsible restaureurism – their seafood is sourced from ‘adopted’ villages along the Coromandel coast (Tuticorin, Kovalam), where fisher folks are encouraged to fish sustainably. Responsible sourcing aside, the Marina makes seafood dining an engaging experience – a centerpiece seafood counter is the hub of activity; you pick your catch and pay by weight. The chefs and many people of the staff are from Odisha. If you are fond of the Odia (even Bengali) style of cooking, you will have fair luck requesting the chef for something off-menu. The first floor is only set up when the lower section packs up; usually over the weekend. I like the look of Marina at night, with bright lights contrasting against muted walls for slick sophistication.
