I have come to trust Oriental Cuisine’s M Mahadevan to keep the city’s dining scene buzzing and he’s delivered once again, with the Writers Cafe. A non-profit venture with Higginbothams, Chennai's oldest bookstore, and International Foundation for Crime Prevention and Victim Care, Writer’s Cafe trains and provides employment to burn victims. The kitchen, run by ex-Oberoi 'Chef Karan Manavalan', more than holds, it own with no-fuss simple plates like 'Salads', 'Flammkuchen' (similar to a pizza) and 'Grilled Chicken'. It is also a great breakfast spot with perfect 'Eggs Benedict' and great 'Siphon Coffee'.
The concept of having a 'real' cafe with 'real' books took its time to arrive.. And it has truly arrived. Writers cafe makes a nice blend having a feel of a library and a cafe. However these are distinct, and the management has kept a clear distinction between the books section and the cafe. This works! Keeps the books stain free. And keeps us hooked to the food while dining. The menu is just perfect. A casual European dining experience. Would definitely recommend their 'rectangle pizza' along with their salads. Nice experience!
The Writers' Cafe serves some of the best continental stuff. The cafe is novel as it has a book shop attached and you can pick a book and browse through or buy it. Another novelty of this place is that they employ burn survivors and differently abled staff. Service at the restaurant is pretty fast and you can explore a variety of menu from both veg and non-veg options. The Flammenkuchen (thin pizza) and their sliders is among the must try items. They also serve good French Toast with preserves. End your meal with a Cappuccino.
The menu is simple and limited in choice, but the food is just great. Their pizza bases (Flammenkuchen in the menu) are the best, allowing you the freedom to choose toppings (veg & non-veg) and cheese types. The sandwiches and sliders are worth trying too. Finally their desserts (waffles, pancakes and crepes) are hidden under the "Breakfast" section, but are gorgeous too! Our favorite family haunt :) Downside - if the place is busy, service can get slack.
A nice concept for a cafe to have. Makes you feel like you are sipping your coffee in a library. Food varieties are also quite good. Worth a visit to spend your time in a hot sunny day.
excellent place to enjoy European cuisine. Freshly prepared items are really mouth watering. Good service and lots of seating capacity. Higginbotham is associated with them.
