Di Ghent tries to evoke the persona of Belgium from its sunny corner at Cross Point Mall with clean lines of wood and stone. On a busy weekend at breakfast, it was effortlessly settling. Table chatter blends with a jovial café-buzz and its service dashes in and out before you begin to notice. I picked up a couple of cookies from the counter as I waited. The 'Chocolate and Peanut Butter Cookie' was rich and crumbly while the 'Spongey Lemon & Cheese Cookie' shone like sunshine in my palm with mellow savour and bright tang. The 'Nederpolder' was a croissant slit and packed with lettuce, parma ham, cherry tomatoes and brie. The croissant was more toasty than flaky and worked perfectly in a light sandwich. 'Di Ghent’s Schone' though is a breakfast of champions. Piled high on a plate with 'Waffles', 'Crispy Bacon, 'Wedges of Roasted Potato' and a 'Fried Egg'. It is an absolute treat at that with waffles light and crisp strewn with smokey and unctuous bacon. A runny yolk on the well-seasoned fried egg, maple syrup and brown sauce tie it together for a very happy meal.
