INJA is a restaurant and bar in Friends Colony West, New Delhi serving Modern Indian, Japanese and bar food with cocktails. Known for cocktails and bar bites; ideal for drinks and date nights.

We spent 10K on a meal that was so terrible, we couldn’t wait to leave for Khan and eat somewhere else. So much for trying something new.

The Setting/ Atmosphere : The place looks cozy- but definitely not fine dining. The staff is overbearing, wasting so much time in explaining the ingredients of the dish - which by the way they do every few seconds at other tables- and with a limited small menu- it gets very frustrating hearing the same rote paragraphs. The USP is that their food is a fusion of Indian and Japanese. Which brings us to -

The Food: We ordered about 6 dishes. The Banarsi chaat was AWFUL - everything is so flushed with sauces n oil that you can’t even taste any single ingredient other than the overpowering sauces. The quantities are so tiny- which turned out to be a good thing for it meant we had less pathetic food to finish. All items are full of oil and cheese where it is not required one bit. Like why in God’s name is there so much oil and cheese in everything- when cheese is not even a part of either authentic Japanese or Indian cuisines.
It tastes like fast-food just 100x prices. The most expensive dish was the stuffed morrels and I kid you not, they murdered it. Gave us like 4 pieces for 1850/- that too, ‘yuk’ is an understatement.
Then comes the mushroom Paniyaram- that was 2 pieces of paniyaram balls one slice of Mushroom in each ball. Absolutely ZERO thought in mixing earthy flavors of the mushroom with rice textures.

At this point, we were sure this place was a fake fine dining scam and that the people were probably laughing in the kitchen at the nonsense that they were getting away with.

Then comes the Gobhi Maki- which gave away their plan to us. “Sell cheap Indian food at Japanese food prices”.
EXCEPT There is a reason sushi is expensive - the ingredients in themselves - Avocado/ asparagus/ Shitake etc are pricey. BUT how do you justify such exorbitant prices for a cauliflower stuffing in some bleh barbecue sauce???? HOW???

The servers would come to the table with a script to narrate and that worsens the experience imo since they raise your expectations which fall flat after a couple seconds. The audacity the server had to ask if we wanted desert. My god we just want to leave, lady!

Also they illegally charge GST @ 18% despite the 5% cap which we will be filing a complaint for -with the bill as proof of course.

In short- If ANYONE is recommending you this nightmare of a place, do your research before going. Order 1-2 dishes to test waters.

Their target audience is probably foreigners who might find something like Gobhi maki “Exotic” but the ones seated around us were fairly unbothered with their shenanigans too.

I would like to end the review with one of the sentences that my brother involuntarily blurted
“Ye to tatti hai” . ??

I'm all for chef-driven restaurants, and Inja is easily one of the best I've visited in the country. For a nation that tends to "Indianise" every cuisine imaginable, it's shocking that I haven't come across a place that seamlessly blends cuisines as disparate as Indian and Japanese until now. One focuses on heat and depth of flavor, while the other prioritizes freshness and cleanliness; yet, Chef Adwait does a remarkable job marrying the two.

We went for the tasting menu and I highly recommend it. It's so good that it is actually difficult to pick a favorite. The Ganne ka ras is seemingly a simple dish, but getting the balance right on it is one of the most impressive things I've seen in a restaurant in years. The bread course—Mangalore buns with filter coffee butter—transported me right back to my ancestral home. It's the best Mangalore bun I've had that wasn't made by my grandmother or mother. The Crab Kuzhambu with Chawanmushi is the dish that best personifies the restaurant's name and philosophy, walking a tightrope of flavor with perfect balance.

I love the idea of the cocktail menu focusing on the five senses, and the drinks really live up to the expectations set by the gorgeously designed menu. We had the Galaxy, the In-Ja Picante, and Inja's Essence, all of which were lovely. However, if I had to pick a favorite, it would be the Bouquet—a delicate, masterfully crafted cocktail.

All of that would go to waste if the service wasn't up to par, so thank god Inja has Jennifer. Not only was she great conversation, but she also knew every dish like the back of her hand, pointing out the subtleties and themes across the food and cocktail menus. We truly had the most wonderful time. Inja has shot all the way up to become my favorite restaurant in Delhi.

I chose this special place to celebrate my birthday with my family, and it truly exceeded all expectations — from the warm hospitality to the incredible Indian–Japanese fusion cuisine.

The staff was wonderful — friendly, attentive, and so knowledgeable about the menu. Their recommendations were spot on!

Our favourites:
Shiso Leaf Banarasi Chaat, Palak Paneer Sarda, Koji Chicken Wings, and the Nepalese Chicken Miso Soup.

I’ve already saved my next visit for exploring the mains!
