Gone are the days when the burger in India was a deep-fried patty or cutlet, placed in between an ordinary sweetish bun with a slice of tomato and onion. The burger buns have changed over the years, the patty has metamorphosed into something exciting and the sauces and fillings today are delightful. The patty has in fact undergone a major makeover and there are a plethora of options to choose from. The buns are of whole wheat or multigrain, laced with herbs and come in various textures. Coleslaw, pickled vegetables, pommery mustard mayonnaise and French fries are the varied accompaniments. The desi burger has clearly disappeared from restaurant menus and instead an array of exciting gourmet burgers are now available in Mumbai.

Indigo Delicatessen, Lower Parel

Known for its Western comfort food, this place offers some lip-smacking burgers. The pulled pork burger is undoubtedly the winner here as carnivores can devour this robust burger with slow cooked succulent ham and drippy cheddar cheese smothered with in-house barbeque sauce within minutes. Vegetarians can relish the soya, barley and cracked wheat burger which boasts of a medley of textures and flavours.

Woodside Inn, Colaba

Woodside's stake out burger is the raison d’être to visit this place if you are a burger fan. This super-size value-for-money burger with chicken, pork, tenderloin, bacon, onion rings is bound to make you skip your next meal. Their unique sriracha red lentils and carrot burger is equally a palate-pleaser for vegetarians. Served with coleslaw or a fresh house salad and fries or potato skins, all their burgers are wholesome and filling.

Ellipsis, Colaba

If it is a hearty meal you are after, stacked with meat, then the Californian burger is the perfect choice. Ground lamb, melted fontina, oak leaf lettuce, tomato, parmesan aioli in a brioche bun served with a side of vegetable chilli fries, spells goodness for any food lover. Wash it down with a beer if you like.

Social, Khar

The OMG burger at Social is a monstrous moist and juicy burger with 2 tenderloin patties, cheese, sausages, salad and fried egg, served with jus. It lives up to its name and this mouth-watering burger makes you exclaim with joy. A favourite among customers, this one is regularly sought after.

Dinshaw’s Xpress Café, Oshiwara

You cannot visit this place and not try their famous mac n cheese burger. Generously filled with layers of mac n cheese pasta and a smoked chicken patty, this burger is a foodie’s delight. The peri fries and aioli mayonnaise dip complete the gourmet experience. What is more, this comes in a vegetarian version too. The Betty aunty mutton burger is another favourite here, as is the Sharmaji tikka burger for those who fancy potatoes.
