Appealing to Mumbaikers palate for decades

Even on her off days, Marine Drive is nothing less than stunning. The city skyline, the promenade with old buildings and restaurants looking over you, the roaring waters of the Arabian Sea, leaves you mesmerized. Amongst the fancy eateries like Pizza by the Bay, Salt Water Cafe, the iconic Gaylord and the popular Shiv Sagar, is a humble old ice cream parlour called K. Rustom. This non-descript joint has been around for the better half of the last century and has collected some very loyal fans who have been visiting for decades now.

K. Rustom is what Mumbaikers (especially South Mumbai folk or town folks as they are often called) believe has the very best ice cream. Unlike the regular scoops in a cup or cone, the uniqueness of this parlour is that they serve it as a delicious ice cream sandwich. Believe it or not, all the ice creams are made in-house at the back of the store and the delicate, crisp wafers that sandwich the ice cream comes especially from a supplier in Hyderabad. It is strangely similar to the Pickwick Wafer Biscuits you would get eons ago.

The parlour, run by a Parsi family, originally started out as a general store in Colaba that sold ice creams on the side and as the dessert got popular they converted into a proper ice cream parlour. Chocolate, raspberry, tutty-fruity, green apple, black current, chocolate crunch, coffee, kishmish, watermelon and even litchi – you name it, they have it. You can get it in the form of an ice cream sandwich and in a regular cup as well. Don't expect elaborate branding or fancy cups and cones for this is old school and judging by the crowd, still a hot favourite.

What's even more interesting is that for right across the street from K.Rustom is the Baskin-Robbins that came to India and became a rage. It has been there for years. Down the street on the other side is the very popular Natural's Ice Cream. Clearly no stranger to competition, and in a time where brands like these are trying to outdo each other with ice cream cakes, innovative flavours and over-the-top sundaes, this simpleton has stuck to its guns and managed to delight customers with its humble little ice cream sandwich.

If you've never been here before, pop by and give it a try. We strongly recommend the Raspberry, Choco-Mint Crunch, Bitter Chocolate and Mango Delight.
