One of the iconic places in Mumbai, this restaurant boasts of a strategic location, which contributes to its popularity. There are three seating areas – outdoor and indoor, at two levels. While the lower level indoor section is more spacious, the one upstairs is cosy. Known for its European fare, the menu offers an equally impressive array of Indian dishes with a special focus on North Indian food. 'Traditional French Onion Soup', 'Chicken A La Kiev', 'Vegetable Au Gratin', are among the must-try dishes here. The meat and seafood section of the menu has a wide selection too. For lovers of Indian cuisine, 'Rogan Josh', 'Tarkewali Dal', 'Gaylord Prawn Curry' and 'Gosht Dum Biryani' are a treat. The presentation of the food is basic but the flavours authentic. The food is value-for-money as the portions are decent. One of the few places that still have the lavish dessert, 'Baked Alaska' on the menu, the 'Caramel Custard' here is one of the best. The well-equipped bar churns out great cocktails apart from the usual wines and spirits. The service staff is a bit brusque and needs to be trained better to keep up with the times.
Mumbai is a city that could dazzle any foodie with its variety and glamour. But when you look at the big picture, you often forget the small additions that formed the culinary scene of Mumbai into what it is today. There are many iconic eateries that are responsible for shaping the fine dining face of the city and amongst the big wigs is one ‘Gaylord’. This legendary institution has been standing in Churchgate for decades and is a major hub for society. Its fantastic location at Mayfair Building on VN Road, earns the restaurant top brownie points in the eyes of the diners. This is the kind of place that has stayed true to its high quality throughout the time and is host to many family dinners. The nostalgic quality of the place still attracts many diners.
Gaylord is the kind of place that never goes out of style. The timeless element extends to the menu too, which boasts of a wide variety of cuisines. Be prepared to tuck into Gaylord’s classic Continental fare or take the desi path with their array of spicy Indian curries. The bakery outside is the focal point of the restaurant and receives much love of the regulars. This is the kind of place that is handed down from generation to generation and is very much part of the family. Start your visit at Gaylord with a generous breakfast spread. If not, then choose some appetizers. Like, fiery chicken wings, hara bhara kabab, koliwada prawns, fish fingers & chips, dahi cheese rolls, chicken kabab and chilli cheese toast. Go with the classics when looking for main course. Seafood is their forte.
In desserts, Gaylord tempts your palate with a plethora of bakery concoctions. Have your pick amongst their pastries and cakes or take the conventional route with, apple pie with ice cream, hot fudge nut sundae, baked Alaska, sizzling walnut brownie, peach pie, malai kulfi and caramel custard. Wash the meal down with couple of delectable cocktails. Including an old-fashioned indoor dining space, Gaylord also has a charming outdoor section. This is the place that is stuck in time. Typical 90’s décor still prevails the restaurant, transporting you back in time. With addition of heavy drapes and chandelier, Gaylord tries to glams up the space. Gaylord is affordable and is a Mumbai classic.
