This plush restaurant is the pride of Oberoi hotels in Kolkata, with its ornately carved wooden artefacts on wood panelled walls, some South East Asian masks, two very huge singha lions at the entrance and a life-size statue of Buddha, this restaurant speaks of class and transports one to Thailand straightaway. Like the décor, immense attention has been given to the food which is as authentic as possible. Even though the price is too steep for the pocket, the experience is spellbinding.
Visited the place since i had heard so much about it. First, the decor is awesome, i was blown away, its amazing - though expected its Oberoi! Next up, service - I would not say its amazing for the price you pay, it is just average, sometimes novice .Drinks - again average, the bill will shoot out the roof(comparing with the price you pay). Next, food - while i do understand the prices as it is situated in the Oberoi, it just does not justify the quality. You do get Thai specialities(though limited) - It is just about average, please do not get me wrong here - This place is good, not for the price justification though. Overall - a 1-time experience!
Walking in and around the Oberoi Grand is always a pleasure and we had such high hopes for its bar and the Baan Thai restaurant. First, the bar. It’s been made over since I stayed here last, 15 years ago. What do as a lovely leather and wood club room has now turned into an uber-smart bar, so the decor depends on your personal preference. I know I preferred the old style. The service here was tediously slow even though there were plenty of staff chatting. And the drinks were mixed amateurly and served, shall I say, rather firmly. Next the Baan Thai - mostly empty, lacking ambience throughout the evening. Food was ok, nothing special, price for the food was around £100 GBP for a group of 4 adults. The drinks, however, doubled the bill and we did not push the boat out. Wine was an eye-watering £49 per bottle of ordinary Italian plonk. Service was friendly but amateur, they need better training.
the environment is too good to hang out with friends and family. a perfevct place for thai food lovers.
The Baan Thai fulfils all the expectations raised by the excellent reviews of the food and service at this wonderfully authentic Thai restaurant. If you are in Calcutta and fancy a slap up meal, this is the place to go to. We will certainly return when we are next in Calcutta
Awesome food. Beautiful ambience. Great hospitality. Enjoyed the food very much. Would love to visit again
