Simple fresh ingredients, flavorful spices and traditional cooking methods epitomise the food here. The ambience is elegant and homely. Meen Varuval, a masala tawa fish fry with distinct lemony flavours, is worth trying. Meat lovers will enjoy the Spicy Meat Balls from the Chettinad region. South of Vindhyas- The Orchid. Located on the ground floor of The Orchid hotel, Mumbai is a perfect place to visit some authentic South Indian cuisine. The ambience here is quite good, have given a typical South Indian tradition touch. The captains also wore traditional kurta and lungis. They also have a live classic instrumental music played post 8pm. The chef has specially curated the menu representing the four states of South - Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. We started the our meal with a hot bowl of Rasam. It is a kind a thin soup prepared using lentils and spices like cumin and black pepper added to mix of tomatoes and tamarind water. The Rasam was amazing, rich in flavours and perfect kick of spice. It has also medicinal benefits. For the starters we had Kothimbir wadi, Kara paniharam, Kerai vadai and cabbage vadai. Each of starter was very delicious and is served along with mint chutney, coconut chutney, tomato chutney and gunpowder. For the main course we opted for the Veg thali. The veg thali has an array of options to try. The thali consisted of Curd rice, Curd, Vegetable stew, cabbage preparation, salad, payyasam, kootu and poriyol of the day. For roti you can get Malabar paratha, neer dosa, appam and more. For rice there are three options available - Steamed rice, boiled rice and masala rice along with sambhar. They also have a trolly in which they have around 7-8 home made pickles. The captain brings this trolly at your table, and you can select whichever pickle you want and get it served in your plate. We ended your meal with filter coffee. The coffee was amazing and aromatic. Our Captain- Mr Sameer was very good, explained each and every dish in details to us and service was also quick. Overall, South of Vindhyas is an amazing place to try some authentic South Indian cuisine. The hospitality was also bang on. They do not leave any stones unturned in providing you an unbelievable experience in terms of service, money and food.
One of the best breakfast i ever had here. They have a live counter for total 52 items which are prepared freshly. From west to north to south, they have various dishes from every area. They had kolkata puri, thalipeeth, puri bhaji, methi toast, kothambir wadi, idli, dosas, meduwada, paniyaaram, dhokla, gughra, fafda, sheera, jalebi, misal, upma, poha, sheera, goli paratha, etc. the best was their filter coffee and vithal dosa. Vithal dosa is one of yheir special dishes, small mini masala dosa with home made butter wraped in banana leaf. I loved it. All their chutneys are too good. I loved the poha and paniyaram too. Even the methi toast was good. Also i loved the poori bhaji and chilly poori. Sheera was too good. As they serve a huge and one of the best live breakfast spread, one should not miss it.
So finally planned on trying some exquisite south indian food. But, obviously cannot visit Kerala during this time. So selected South Of Vindhyas at The Orchids for my cravings. So the time we visited it was The Coorg Food Festival. Known for its amazing seafood thaali due the event we were served some special preparations. Located in ground floor of The Orchids the place gathers a lot of attention from people around. Which has around 60% of non residential folks ( who are not staying at orchids). The ambience here is not a 5 star ambience but a perfect traditional ambience which actually makes you enjoy the food. They have window which makes you feel like you are having your meal in middle of a peaceful village. So since the time we entered this place we were properly greeted by Mr. Harshad. A very warm welcome and classic service. He being the manager he was taking feedback from customers personally which is very rare from a management that busy. So our take was obviously the well known seafood thali which costs around Rs 1800 + Tax. Apart from this they also have an exceptional breakfast which is served till 10:30am prices at Rs 800/-. The best part about the breakfast is they serve 25 items and all of them cooked live. So starting with our experience we started with papad and Kozhi Rasam(Chicken Soup). The soup tasted mind blowing and the spices were perfect. Coming to starters we were served plate full of 4 types of starters. Dry Masala Prawns(Must try) is an amazing starter infused with carom seeds which gives it a perfect aroma and served with laccha onions. Spicy Chicken Supreme is another amazing appetizer flavoured with aniseed giving at an amazing strong aroma again going well with coconut oil cooking. Lemon Pan Seared fish was a crispy preparation of seared fish cooked with rava coasting which is a perfect coastal dish. The Dal vada was surely one of my childhood delight which I enjoyed the most with coconut chutney. Now comes the most beautiful seafood thaali which has chicken gravy, lamb gravy, fish gravy, crab meat, squid, stew and bamboo gravy. I couldn't even complete all of them as each and every gravy was just heavenly made. I am not a crab fan but I just loved the way they served it and the same with squid. But my personal favourite was stew which I had with iddyappam a perfect match. The other breads we tried were appam and malabari parotha. Talking about desserts my favourite was payasam. Full of dry fruits felt very premium. The next thing was super tasty Rasmalai which was actually perfect and out of the world. We were served with two mocktails cucumber cooler and watermelon cooler. Cucumber was one of the best I ever tried. My overall experience was a perfect class act and would love to visit this place again to experience authentic south indian food.
Food at this place is amazing. Lots of stuff was good but I liked their specialty which was a dosa with butter on it and it was amazing. That is what I'd like to have again. Staff was polite, warm and friendly. They kept checking whether we're liking the food and enjoying our breakfast. Their coffee is amazing.
Being a half South Indian breed, I am aware of the taste that comes from the roots of Kerala but South Of Vindhyas doesn't stop there. Four states food form to make this beautiful restaurant a place for every diner to eat here. From cultural greetings to the ethnicity in the staff costumes, everything takes you away from city life. The restaurant is decked up in hue of golden and well lit for a perfect evening with your loved ones. Be it their breakfast with 56 items or their lunch/dinner everything is prepared in-house with separate kitchens for veg & non-veg. We tried Paan Mojito, Grapple to start our journey along with Chicken Rasam. Moving on to Prawns, Chicken & Fish starters perfectly made. Then comes the main course which looks like a king sized food and not to forget the pickles made by the chef himself. I had a great experience and I must say that this place is definitely a treat to your dining experience.
