Japanese cuisine has morphed into a global culinary phenomenon. Diners are swooning at the thought of Sushi, Sashimi and Nilgiris. With restaurants going all out to celebrate things like World Sushi Day, you know it has got an audience but there is so much more to Japanese food than just sushi. If you are familiar with the cuisine or are eager to eat more and familiarise your palate to the world of Japanese flavours, then dining at these restaurants might help. We have picked what we believe are some of the best spots in the city serving Japanese cuisine.
Bandra's oldest and most favoured spot for a Japanese meal, Kofuku serves some of the best Japanese food and diners cannot get enough of it. You feel like you are in a restaurant in Japan with their low tables and Tatami mats ( you could opt for a regular table as well ) as well as their live kitchen and bar. Top choices here are their Katsu Curry, Black Cod in Miso, Beef Teppanyaki and Pork Gyozas.
While the restaurant serves all types of cuisines as the hotel's all-day casual dining restaurant and is not an out and out Japanese restaurant, the reason it features on this list is that of the extensive Japanese menu and the sheer quality of food. The sushi is outstanding and there is plenty of choice. The Salmon or Yellow Tail Carpaccio, Udon Noodles with Tempura Prawns and Katsudon are other noteworthy dishes. They also have fixed Japanese set meals if you are confused about ordering.

This quirky restaurant is more casual dining with a playful decor and a pop of colours. Located in BKC it is a refreshing change from the more cafe and fine dining style surrounding restaurants and is far more affordable than most Japanese restaurants without compromising on taste or quality. What they do best here are their Ramen Bowls and Donburi Bowls but the Sushi, spicy Salmon Miso Soup and their Katsu Curry are worth trying.

The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Colaba launched their exclusive Japanese restaurant nearly 14 years ago and with it kicked off a trend of Japanese restaurants slowly mushrooming across the city or at the very least a heavy inclusion of more Japanese dishes across all Oriental style menus. Wasabi By Morimoto finds its name among the top 100 restaurants in the world and with good reason. The signature dish here is the black cod miso with the cod being flown down twice a week from Tokyo's Tsukiji Market. The White Fish Carpaccio, Sashimi and even their Omakase menu where you let the Chef decide the choice of dishes are all worthy culinary experiences.
Bandra's most loved restaurant has diners travelling from all over the city to eat here. The Thai and Japanese menu which is relatively well priced has been delighting folks for nearly 2 years and judging by the never-ending crowds they can not seem to get enough. The Sushi, Sashimi, Tuna Tataki Salad, Katsudon, Miso Tofu and Avocado Salad are just some of the favourites here. They also launch seasonal menus which have new delights but you need to ask the server.
