Although you have to climb up a flight of stairs, it is completely worth it. The menu has been carefully crafted keeping in mind the local taste bud while not throwing away the authenticity of the cuisine. 'Crackling Spinach' is a vegetarian favourite and 'Pan Fried Asian Chilly Fish with a Spicy House Chilli Sauce' is an explosion in the mouth. For us Chinese food has always been a source of comfort and joy. This wonderful ancient cuisine may have been bought to India by Chinese expats but gradually we Indians fell in love with the cuisine’s aromatic depth and heart-warming quality. So much so that we adapted this cuisine as our own and tweaked it to make it more suitable for Indian palate. Many restaurants have tried to discover the culinary delights of Chinese food, trying to capture the authenticity through their cooking, but either they are expensive or not so good. ‘Mainland China’ has become a respectable name in fine dining circuit and in a city like Kolkata, where locals have a deep love for Chinese food, Mainland China is highly sought after. There is one outlet of Mainland China located at Uniworth House in Ballygunge.
For many, Mainland China has become synonymous to authentic Chinese food in India. The restaurant is known for serving five star quality Chinese food for not so expensive prices. Flavours are strong and as authentic as it can get. A full bar menu supports the food menu. We recommend you to pick a drink first before diving into the appetizers. Make an entire course of the dimsums coming in vast mouth-watering variety. Or stick with, chilli teriyaki potatoes, sliced chicken with kaffir lime, sizzling lamb with cumin & coriander, Sichuan chilli baby corns, golden fried king prawns and lettuce wraps with water chestnuts & chicken. Move towards the second course with, fiery sapo vegetables in a clay pot, crabmeat braised in ginger wine, honey glazed lemon chicken, braised udon noodles with Asian greens and duckmeat in black pepper sauce.
Order a portion of fried rice or noodles alongside to truly enjoy your main course. Finally conclude the meal with a scrumptious dessert such as, lychees with ice cream, honey noodles with almond flakes, sizzling brownie with hot chocolate sauce, coconut caramel custard, orange crème brulee, mango pudding and steamed coconut dumplings with honey butter sauce. There is a distinct Kolkata vibe to the décor of Mainland China. Heavy wooden furniture is used to break the vast space. Oriental medallions, trio of golden terracotta warriors, Chinese trellis and oriental showpieces does a lot to emphasis the Chinese theme. Only marginally expensive, Mainland China stands true to every bit of its reputation.
After the success of first Mainland China outlet in Kolkata, another one opened soon after in Silver Spring Arcade in Science City Area.
