Monsoons may be the season we associate with khichdi, yet, winters too call for piping hot food. There can be no better comfort food than khichdi, eaten with pickle and papad or perhaps raita and topped with a spoonful of ghee. This one-dish meal is nutritious, with an abundance of carbohydrates, proteins and all nutrients that the body needs in this season. Chefs today are getting creative even with a basic dish like khichdi and are adding various ingredients to up the flavour quotient. Khichdi is no longer the basic dal and rice combination only, but millets, vegetables and even meats are being added. So rev up your taste buds as you relish a delicious khichdi in Mumbai this winter.


Bihar khichdi at Neel, Powai 

The khichdi festival at Neel Mahalaxmi and Powai offer an array of 8 comforting khichdis from all over India. The Karnataka mutton khichdi will entice carnivores with its aromatic flavours and spices, while the highlight surprisingly is the simple, Bihar Khichdi. Made of kolam rice and yellow moong, it is served with Bihar’s special aloo bhujiya, aloo kachokha, black lentil papad and lauki ka raita. Fret not vegetarians, you can devour this with paneer.

A well-spiced preparation of dal and rice with potatoes, Madras onions and tempered with ghee and spices, this dish boasts of unique aromatic flavours. The melange of textures and flavours in one dish is what sets this one apart.  

Palak Khichdi at Gajalee, Vile Parle East 

A haven for seafood lovers, this may seem like a strange recommendation but the palak khichdi here is outstanding. Packed with subtle spices and spinach, it is a delicious and filling meal. There is a dal khichdi available too if spinach is not what you fancy.
