I have known Chef Naren for over a decade and a half now and what has not changed one bit is his passion to give you food that is good and unpretentious. Not for him the frills and fancy of trends that come and go and perhaps that is what makes Karavalli a never-fail option. Meat eaters, vegetarians and seafood lovers have ample choice. Make a start with the 'Crab Milagu Fry' which will bring on some tears thanks to the pepper base (at this point remember that Chef has an annual crab festival that lasts just a day or so. Make a note to find out when). The 'Gobi Kempu Bezule', which translates to 'Cauliflower Red Fry' has a yogurt and chilli base and makes for a great start. For those who love their tubers – the 'Urullakkizhangu Roast', or the 'Baby Potato Roast', 'Malabar style' is one to go for. You cannot go wrong with the 'Sungatache Kodi' (Prawn Curry) and 'Red Rice', or the 'Kori Gassi with Appam' or Neer Dosa'. The 'Kori Rotti' too is a classic combination available here. The 'Alambo Arepu' or the 'Mushroom Curry' takes you straight to Mangalore’s coast and the Vazhapoo Thoran to Kerala. The 'Karvalli Mutton Curry' or the 'Kadala Gassi' are great main courses. And the goodness spreads to the desserts as well – think 'Bebinca', 'Elaneer Payasam', 'Dodal', 'Chiroti', 'Ada Pradhaman' and more. And do not forget to drink up a glass of the 'Rasam' for the day! Share a meal with a friend with the tiffin carrier meals in meat, seafood and vegetarian that work well for 2.
