Iftar meals are an obligatory gluttonous frenzy, whether you are fasting or not! Admittedly, it is unfair to pit Chennai against the likes of Hyderabad, Delhi or Mumbai with streetfood meccas such as Charminar, Jama Masjid or Mohammed Ali Road. However, the city’s restaurants and hotels have taken it upon themselves to dish out some respectable Iftar specials for Chennai foodies. We have rounded up some interesting Iftar trends in Chennai for you to check out, and partake in the gluttony:
Iftar set meal at Cafe Mercara Express and Spoonbill
One might put their money on ITC to make the best haleem in town, given its reputable provenance with kababs and curries. Indeed, the Grand Chola would prove punters right. Spoonbill is a popular spot for sampling global street food in a budget. The youthful self service venue on TTK road plates together menu-hits such as Indonesian chicken momos, Turkish doner kababs and Afghan keema samosa for an Iftar platter at Rs. 300.
Iftar boxes at Savoury Sea Shell, Zaitoon and Cappuccino
Iftar in the fast-food age - love them or hate them, going by their popularity, Iftar Boxes are here to stay. Neatly packaged for mobility, and suitable for the microwave, these a great grab-n-go options if you are in a hurry. The quality and variety varies with price. Savoury Sea Shell is a popular budget option; their mini Iftar-kit packs chicken haleem, shawarma, fruits, dates and a beverage for Rs. 99. For Rs. 300, Zaitoon offers fair value - adding a lukhmi, grilled chicken, coin barotta, chicken curry, mutton biryani, khubus, thoum and a dessert.
Crowne Plaza offers the platinum version at Cappuccino - Rs. 600 plus taxes gets you juicy keema samosa, mutton haleem, fresh fruits and freshly squeezed juice, pakodas and double ka meetha.

Iftar Buffet at Fisherman’s Fare and Anise
An unlimited spread of Iftar specials is undeniably alluring during this season. Fisherman's Fare remains ever-popular for its spread, the highlight of which is Nombu Kanji. A Tamil Iftar staple of a toothsome rice & mutton gruel, it is fast disappearing in favour of the Hyderabadi haleem, which you shall also find in the buffet apart from badam milk, bajji, rice and fruits at Rs. 399
Anise at the Taj Coromandel starts dishing out its delectable dinner spread at the time of Roza and serves an Iftar special haleem until 7.30 PM. Relish kababs, Middle Eastern sweets and mezze platters, but do save some space for the biryani. Whilst not widely publicised, Anise’ Gilli Gosht Biryani is easily one of the best in the city at Rs.1985 all inclusive.
