After a successful show in Bangalore, the Boston-based chain of a quick-service bakery cum café ventured into Kolkata in 2013 with a kiosk at the food court of the swanky Quest Mall. Months later, they launched a second outlet, their flagship café – this time, a swanky 140-seater – on Park Street (it occupies the iconic spot that used to be Music World). A city-based Frenchman designed the artworks on the walls (murals in pastel shades, ornate window frames and other bric-a-brac from old Kolkata mansions) and repainted antique furniture, comfy sofas and hanging lamps completed the setting. The response was commendable, except few could pronounce the name right! The menu here has typical American staples such as the classic macaroni and cheese, hearty soups served in bread bowls, hot and cold sandwiches and more. But the chief draw here has been their range of oven-fresh toasted bagels – plain, skinny, jalapeño-cheddar and onion-garlic. Slathered with cream cheese, their chewy bagels make for a fantastic breakfast when paired with a cup of coffee,. Au Bon Pain’s latest outlet in the city recently opened its doors in the Acropolis Mall.
